Freelance Web Development Rates in 2026: Hourly, Project and Salary Data
By Manob Editorial ·

As of October 2026, Upwork says web developers on its marketplace generally cost $15 to $50 an hour, from $15–$28 for WordPress to $20–$38 for React. US employed web developers earned a median $44.54 an hour in May 2025, per the BLS. Upwork's project estimates run from $500 for a landing page to $50,000 for a custom web app.
We collected every figure below from its original source on October 14, 2026: Upwork's hiring pages, Arc's pricing page, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The method and its limits are explained at the end.
Freelance web development hourly rates by specialty
| Specialty | Typical hourly rate on Upwork | Source page |
|---|---|---|
| Web developer (general) | $15–$50 | Web developers |
| React.js developer | $20–$38 | React.js developers |
| Full-stack developer | $16–$35 | Full-stack developers |
| MVP developer | $16–$35 | MVP developers |
| Front-end developer | $15–$35 | Front-end developers |
| Web designer | $15–$30 | Web designers |
| Shopify developer | $15–$29 | Shopify developers |
| WordPress developer | $15–$28 | WordPress developers |
- The floor barely moves. Seven of the eight ranges start at $15 or $16. React is the exception at $20.
- The ceiling is where specialties differ. React's top of $38 is 36% above WordPress's $28.
- These are typical, not maximums. Upwork's web developer page adds that "experienced specialists can charge considerably more."
- Vetted networks list a wider span. Arc's pricing page shows freelance hires at "$15 - $110+" per hour.
What do freelance web projects cost?
Upwork's general web developer page gives these planning estimates, which it calls "a starting budget":
| Project | Level (per Upwork) | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page or microsite | Beginner | $500–$2,000 |
| Business website | Intermediate | $2,000–$8,000 |
| E-commerce store | Intermediate to expert | $5,000–$15,000 |
| Custom web application | Expert | $10,000–$50,000 |
| Ongoing maintenance and support | Intermediate to expert | $500–$2,000 |
The same project on different Upwork pages
Upwork publishes separate estimates on each specialty page, and they don't agree. We lined them up by project type:
| Project | Web developers page | Specialty pages |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page | $500–$2,000 | Front-end $300–$700 · WordPress $300–$1,000 · Web design only $300–$1,500 · Full-stack $1,500–$5,000 |
| Business website | $2,000–$8,000 | Front-end, 5–8 pages $700–$2,000 · WordPress $1,000–$3,000 · Web design only $1,500–$5,000 |
| Online store | $5,000–$15,000 | WordPress (WooCommerce) $2,500–$8,000 · Shopify custom theme $3,000–$10,000 · Full-stack $10,000–$40,000 |
| Custom web app | $10,000–$50,000 | Full-stack $8,000–$30,000 · Web design only $5,000–$15,000+ |
| Maintenance | $500–$2,000 | React $400–$1,500 · WordPress $500–$2,000 · Front-end $900–$2,500 |
The spread is the useful part. A landing page runs from $300 to $5,000 depending on which page you read. The cheap end is a page built on WordPress or plain front-end code. The top end is a full-stack build with a back end behind it. When you quote or compare quotes, the platform and the scope move the price more than the job's name does. What do US web developers earn as employees?
The BLS figures below are for employees in the US, from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. It surveys employers, so it doesn't cover freelancers. It's still a useful public benchmark for what the same skills earn in a salaried job.
| Hourly wage, May 2025 | Web developers | Web and digital interface designers |
|---|---|---|
| 10th percentile | $23.12 | $25.84 |
| 25th percentile | $30.88 | $35.24 |
| Median | $44.54 | $50.00 |
| Mean | $47.49 | $56.49 |
| 75th percentile | $60.69 | $76.36 |
| 90th percentile | $78.03 | $96.90 |
| Median annual wage | $92,650 | $104,000 |
Sources: BLS occupational profiles for web developers (15-1254) and web and digital interface designers (15-1255), and the Occupational Outlook Handbook. The handbook counts about 87,400 web developer jobs in 2025 and says 18% of web developers were self-employed.
Put the two sources side by side and the gap is plain. The top of Upwork's general web developer range, $50, sits between the BLS median ($44.54) and 75th percentile ($60.69) for US employees. All seven of Upwork's specialty ranges top out below the US median. Upwork is a global marketplace, so its typical rates mix freelancers from many countries and costs of living.
How to work out your own freelance rate
A freelance rate has to cover what an employer would otherwise pay for. Start from the income you want and work backward:
Minimum hourly rate = (target income + business costs) ÷ billable hours
Here's an example with our own assumptions, so swap in yours:
- Target income: $92,650, the BLS median salary for US web developers.
- Business costs and extra tax: $15,000 a year. That covers software, hardware, insurance and the employer's share of Social Security and Medicare. The IRS sets self-employment tax at 15.3%, which you pay in full when you work for yourself.
- Billable hours: 1,200 a year, about 25 hours a week for 48 weeks. Sales, admin and learning take the rest.
That gives ($92,650 + $15,000) ÷ 1,200 = $89.71 an hour, roughly double the BLS median employee wage. If you sell through a marketplace, divide by what you keep after its fee. At a 10% fee, $89.71 ÷ 0.9 is $99.68. Upwork's fee page uses the same math: to take home $20 an hour at a 10% fee, it says to charge $22.22.
A rate like that won't win price-led jobs on a global marketplace. It's realistic for direct clients, referrals and specialist work. Use marketplaces to build a portfolio and reviews, then aim for direct clients. Our guide to becoming a freelance web developer covers finding those clients.
How platform fees change what you keep
| Platform | Freelancer fee, as of October 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Upwork | 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you apply. Proposals use Connects, which cost $0.15 each. | Freelancer Service Fee, Connects |
| Fiverr | Freelancer earns 80% of each order, including extras and tips | Earnings page |
| manob.ai (ours) | 20% commission on services; new sellers get 50 free Connects for bidding | Become a seller |
A 20% fee means charging $25 to keep $20. Build the fee into your quote rather than absorbing it. Our Upwork vs Fiverr comparison covers client fees, payment protection and payout timing on both.
What moves a web developer's rate?
Upwork lists the factors itself: "the developer's experience, your project's complexity, the technology or platform involved, the amount of design and development required, and whether you're hiring for a one-time project or ongoing work." In practice:
- Stack. React work prices higher than WordPress on Upwork's own pages.
- Back-end work. Anything with accounts, payments or a database moves the job toward the full-stack and custom app ranges.
- Clear scope. A written page list or a finished design lets a developer quote a fixed price with less padding.
- Ongoing work. Maintenance retainers trade a lower rate for steady hours.
- Location and client base. The BLS figures above are US wages. Upwork's ranges reflect a global pool.
How we collected this data
On October 14, 2026 we opened eight Upwork hiring pages (web developers, front-end, full-stack, React.js, WordPress, Shopify, web designers and MVP developers) and recorded the hourly range and project estimates each page states. Upwork presents these as planning estimates for its marketplace and doesn't publish how it calculates them. We took Arc's range from its pricing page the same day. BLS wages come from the May 2025 national estimates for occupations 15-1254 and 15-1255, the latest release, pulled from BLS's own data. The project table groups Upwork's line items by our reading of their descriptions, for example treating "E-commerce store" and "Custom theme development" for Shopify as the same online-store job. None of this is sales data, and rates change. Check the linked pages before you quote or budget.
If you're hiring rather than quoting, you can post a job or browse freelancers on manob.ai's services marketplace, or compare platforms in our Upwork alternatives guide.
