9 Upwork Alternatives for Freelancers and Clients

The right Upwork alternative depends on your complaint. Tired of paying Connects to bid? Fiverr, Contra or a vetted network like Toptal or Arc. Want lower fees? Freelancer.com, Guru or Malt. For web work around templates, Manob, our own platform. As of October 2026, Upwork charges freelancers 0–15% per contract and clients up to 7.99% on its free Basic plan.

Why people look for Upwork alternatives

The complaints are consistent, and Upwork's own help pages explain most of them:

  • Paying to bid. Connects cost $0.15 each, and the number a proposal needs varies by job. They aren't returned when the client rejects you, hires someone else or lets the job expire.
  • A fee you can't predict. The Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract and is set by factors Upwork doesn't list. You see it only when you apply or get an offer.
  • The client side. Clients on the free Basic plan pay a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on every payment, and Upwork doesn't refund it even when the payment is reversed.

None of the alternatives below fixes all three. The list runs from broad marketplaces to specialized networks, so it isn't a ranking. Find the problem you care about most and read that entry first.

The 9 Upwork alternatives, one by one

1. Fiverr: best if you're done paying to bid

Fiverr removes bidding. You publish Gigs with fixed packages and buyers order them, so there's no cost per pitch. The trade-off is a higher cut: Fiverr's earnings page says freelancers earn 80% of each order, and its freelancer guide sets a 14-day clearing period after completion, shorter for some seller levels. For clients, Fiverr's payments page lists 5.5% plus $3.50 on orders under $200. Fiverr also runs hourly orders, with a $5 order initiation fee and weekly charges held in escrow until the client approves them. We compare the two side by side in Upwork vs Fiverr.

2. Freelancer.com: best for clients who want low fees

Freelancer.com works like Upwork, with job posts and bids, plus contests. Its fees page lists a client fee of 3% or $3 (whichever is greater) on fixed-price projects and 3% on hourly payments, one of the two lowest client fees here alongside Guru's 2.9%. Freelancers pay 10% or $5 (whichever is greater) on fixed-price work and 10% on hourly. Membership plans exist, but the fees page doesn't list their prices. Milestone disputes cost each party $5 or 5%, whichever is greater, in arbitration fees (dispute policy).

3. Guru: best for long relationships with low job fees

Guru works by quotes: clients post a job or invite freelancers, compare quotes, then agree terms and pay, with SafePay available as payment protection, according to its how it works page. It charges freelancers a job fee tied to membership. Its job fee page gives 9% on the Basic membership and 5% on Executive, and the client can agree to cover up to 5% of it. Clients pay a 2.9% handling fee per invoice, offset by a 3% cashback when they pay by eCheck, check or wire. If you work with the same clients for months, Guru's numbers hold up well against Upwork's.

4. PeoplePerHour: best for UK freelancers who keep clients

PeoplePerHour rewards long client relationships. Its commission page charges 20% below £250 of lifetime billing per buyer, 7.5% from £250 to £5,000 and 3.5% above £5,000, all excluding VAT. Buyers pay £0.60 plus 10% by card or PayPal under its terms, and earnings clear 14 days before you can withdraw them by default, sooner once you bill more. Its first tier costs more than Upwork's maximum, so it pays off only once a client relationship is established.

5. Contra: best for freelancers who bring their own clients

Contra charges freelancers no commission, according to its pricing page. On the free plan, the client pays a flat fee per payment, $15 up to $499 and $29 from $500, per that pricing page and its fees overview. Those fees drop to $0 if the freelancer subscribes to Pro ($29 a month or $199 a year), and card processing is charged separately. The free plan's job opportunities are marked "Limited". Contra is strongest as a commission-free way to contract and invoice clients you already have, and weaker as a source of new ones.

6. Malt: best for consultants working in Europe

On Malt you don't bid on job posts. Its automated matching sends project opportunities to freelancers whose profile (skills, job title, daily rate, location) fits the client's criteria, and clients can also contact you directly. Its freelancer fee page lists 5%, with some projects in France, Spain and Belgium starting at 10% and dropping to 5% after six months. Client fees vary by country. In the UK, Starter is 10% and Advanced is 15% (client plans). Malt also says freelancers on eligible projects are paid within 10 days of the client validating the work.

7. Toptal: best for hiring senior engineers without screening them yourself

Toptal vets freelancers before matching them with clients. It says it accepts fewer than 3% of applicants, a claim you'll have to take on trust. Its client FAQ lists a flat $79 monthly subscription if you proceed with matching, a trial of up to two weeks, and billing typically twice a month. The talent FAQ says members set their own rates and Toptal doesn't take a cut. For freelancers, the cost is the screening itself, which Toptal says usually takes a few weeks.

8. Arc: best for clients hiring vetted remote developers

Arc focuses on developers. Its pricing page lists freelance rates of "$15 - $110+" per hour, a trial period of up to two weeks, and 20% of annual salary for full-time hires. Arc says its vetted talent has passed communication and technical assessments. It doesn't list what developers pay. It's a narrower pool than Upwork, aimed at clients who'd rather be matched than read 50 proposals.

9. Manob (our own platform): best for web work that starts from a template

Manob is our own platform, so read this entry with that in mind. It's much smaller than Upwork. Like Upwork, it has job posts that sellers bid on with Connects (Jobs) and a catalog of freelance Services. It also sells 707 products, mostly WordPress themes and HTML templates. A client can buy a theme, which comes with 6 months of seller support, and hire someone to customize it in the same place.

Sellers pay 20% commission on services and 30% on products, or 10% on both for the first 12 months at the early-bird rate. New sellers start with 50 free Connects, and licensing is non-exclusive, so your Upwork profile can stay active. Being honest about the numbers: after the first year, 20% is higher than anything in Upwork's 0–15% range. The reason to join is selling templates and template work together, not a lower long-run fee. The seller page has the details.

Which Upwork alternatives don't charge you to bid?

If Connects are the problem, three models avoid bidding entirely:

  • Catalog: Fiverr. Buyers order your packages, so there's nothing to pay per pitch.
  • Matching: Toptal and Arc. The platform matches you with clients after vetting, so you don't write proposals for every job, but you have to pass their screening.
  • Profile-led: Malt and Contra. Clients come to your profile, or you bring your own and invoice through the platform.

Freelancer.com, Guru, PeoplePerHour and Manob all involve bidding or quoting on job posts in some form, like Upwork.

Which is the best Upwork alternative for web developers?

For a developer, the choice comes down to job size and how you want clients to find you. Fixed-scope work like WordPress setup, speed fixes and small integrations sells well as Fiverr packages. Senior, long-term engineering roles fit Toptal or Arc. Freelancer.com and Guru are the closest like-for-like replacements if you want the same post-and-bid market with lower fees. If your work revolves around themes and templates, a marketplace that sells both is worth a look. Our guide on how to become a freelance web developer covers building the profile you'll need on any of them. Clients can use how to hire a WordPress developer to scope a job before posting it anywhere. The Fiverr side has its own list: Fiverr alternatives.

When to stay on Upwork

Upwork remains the better choice in several situations:

  • You bill hourly. Hourly Payment Protection covers qualifying time logged with Upwork's time tracker. If hourly billing is most of your income, read any alternative's hourly protection terms before you move.
  • You want fixed-price milestones funded upfront. Clients fund each milestone before work starts, and payment releases automatically 14 days after you submit if the client doesn't respond (source).
  • Your fee beats Fiverr's. Upwork's fee tops out at 15%, below Fiverr's 20%, so it stays cheaper as long as your Connects spend is under control.
  • You bring clients with you. Freelancer Plus includes a 0% freelancer fee when you bring new clients to Upwork through Direct Contracts, plus 100 Connects a month.
  • Your reviews live there. Upwork gives 30 free Connects for each talent badge, and a Top Rated history doesn't transfer to a new platform.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Upwork?

For a similar post-and-bid marketplace with lower fees, Freelancer.com or Guru. To stop paying for bids, Fiverr. For vetted senior developers, Toptal or Arc.

Is there a site like Upwork without Connects?

Yes. Fiverr has no bidding because buyers order your Gigs directly. Toptal and Arc match freelancers with clients after vetting. Contra and Malt let clients find you through your profile.

Which freelance site has lower fees than Upwork?

As of October 2026, Contra charges freelancers no commission, Malt's freelancer fee is 5% (10% on some French, Spanish and Belgian projects), and Guru charges 5% to 9% depending on membership. Upwork's fee is 0% to 15% per contract, so a cheaper option depends on the rate you'd get there.

Is Fiverr better than Upwork for beginners?

Often, because Fiverr doesn't charge you to apply for work, while new Upwork freelancers spend Connects on proposals that may not win. Fiverr's 20% cut is higher, though.

Can I use Upwork and another platform at the same time?

Yes. Many freelancers keep several profiles. What Upwork discourages is moving a client you met on Upwork off the platform without paying its conversion fee.
