"Missing core files or incorrect folder structure" error.

By Ratul Sikder · · Updated

Getting a "missing files" or 404 error during setup usually happens when you upload the wrong file package to your server. Most often, the actual deployable project folder is hidden inside the main download bundle along with documentation.

Encountering missing file errors or broken paths right after uploading is highly frustrating, but it is almost always a simple folder structure mistake rather than a broken product. Sellers frequently package the main deployable application inside an outer folder that also contains documentation, source assets, and licensing files. When you upload that entire outer bundle to your server's public directory, the server cannot find the main index.html or index.php file in the root. Common causes and quick fixes include:

  • Wrong .zip File: Extract your initial downloaded file, locate the actual application folder inside, and upload only the contents of that specific folder to your server.
  • Incomplete Uploads: Large web apps might fail to upload fully due to server timeout limits; fix this by uploading directly via FTP instead of browser-based file managers.
  • Framework Build Missing: For React or Vue projects, ensure you have run the build command and are serving the /dist or /build folder, not the raw source code.
